Jeane and I celebrated our 10th anniversary tonight (it was Oct. 10) by attending a live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion from the PAC’s downtown-Tulsa Chapman Music Hall. It’s a miracle we got tickets and big props to Jeane for making it happen. Garrison Keillor, Tim Russell, Sue Scott, Fred Newman, and the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band were joined by the Hot Club of Cowtown, Tulsa boy Elvin Bishop, and Oklahoman Monica Taylor. As an added bonus, Cindy Cashdollar sat in with the band on pedal steel and dobro. Let’s just say it was a fantastic night. It marks the second time we have seen a live broadcast of the show, and it’s truly the fastest two hours of your life. And we saw it all from Row J of the Orchestra section. You can’t hardly do better than that.
But we did. Thanks to the generosity of a friend, we dined at the trés chic Mahogany steak house. It was utterly phenomenal. We may have sinned in the form of gluttony because everything was so good. Everything we ordered was superb, plus—and this is what really makes or breaks a restaurant for us—the service was beyond compare. We love good food, and very few things please us like taking friends out to new restaurants we have discovered. Few things in life please me like long, lingering meals with good friends and good conversation; however, Jeane and I don’t always take the time to share that experience with just each other. It was a beautiful time as we laughed and looked back at 10 blessed and rapid years together. We’re nowhere near where we each thought we’d be, but we wouldn’t change a thing. God sure knows what He’s doing, and don’t you ever forget it.
And Jeane, let me say publicly what I said privately: I love you more than life itself. No one—and I mean no one—gets me like you do. As Hal Holbrook tells Delta Burke, “I don’t deserve you, but neither does anyone else, so I might just as well have you.” You have been my steady and constant friend and confidant for a decade, and I am thrilled that it’s just a good start for what’s coming next. I’m so glad you’re my home companion. And I love you more than my luggage.
