Will Oklahoma Baptists Support J.C. Watts?

1

May 5, 2009 by Tyson Wynn

I recently received this flyer in the mail from Mainstream Oklahoma Baptists.

Just wondering how J.C. Watts’ affiliation with the New Baptist Covenant group (supported by Presidents Carter and Clinton) will play with Oklahoma Baptist voters—if he decides to jump in the governor’s race. What, if any, effect will it have in the race? What say you?

I seriously doubt that it will have any effect at all. The vast majority of church goers are not involved in their national bodies and most voters are not informed enough to even be aware of the political connection involved in this event. The only way I see this becoming an issue is if bloggers like yourself or KFAQ take issue with it and drum up some drama, which is always fun.
As for Watts’ campaign, I could see him being very successful if he can win over the older, more racially conservative generation in the state. I expect him to have strong support in the African-American community and the business community which is an interesting and rare coalition. You also have the OU football connection which doesn’t hurt one bit. The fact that the state has a two term Governor leaving is always helpful for the opposing party.
