KOTV Reports on the Tywone Parks Incident

March 7, 2008 by Tyson Wynn

Ashli Sims of the News on 6 reported on the Tywone Parks incident on the 10:00 news tonight. The TV version was very similar to what was reported here.

I take issue with only one thing: RSU was locked down. It’s how I first heard about the incident. Though the lockdown was not campus-wide, it did occur and was reported in the Claremore Progress (but never posted online) as merely a precaution. The Progress later reported that the lockdown was predicated on what Claremore Police Department Assistant Chief Stan Brown said may have been “embellished information.

Here’s the audio from KOTV’s report:

It is alarming to me that RSU’s president, Joe Wiley, did not take that threat seriously enough to take steps to ensure the college community’s safety. It is also extremely disheartening to read that the CPD Assist Chief was making decisions when he considered the threat as possible “embellished information.” We are fortunate that this fellow, Parks, did not follow through on any threats, but I’m not feeling very safe on campus knowing the type of leadership we have there.

He was in custody at the time…what was he going to do? What need was the campus to be locked down? Have a little faith in the leadership of our university.

  3. Tyson Wynn says:

Parks was not in custody until after 6 PM, Feb. 19, 2008.

Faith results from a history of good behavior. Pardon some of us if we personally know that faith is not warranted.

And I reiterate: a lockdown was initiated on campus. It has been widely reported.

And for the record, I don’t appreciate people commenting with fake email addresses. I usually don’t approve the comments, but I did yours so that I could reply.

For the record, I love the university. I have little to no faith in the current leadership. I have high hopes for the incoming administration. We’ll see how it goes.

From the reliable reports I have read, Parks was NOT in custody when the limited lockdown occurred, and the limited lockdown resulted from serious threats to students and the campus. If RSU administration considered it enough of a threat to pursue a limited lockdown, the rest of the campus community NEEDED TO BE AWARE of the threat IMMEDIATELY, not a full day later by e-mail!

I have to clarify a bit of information for all of you. The day the limited lockdown took place on campus Mr. Parks was in control of the CPD at 1:50 pm. The reason I know this is because I was on the phone with him while the CPD were searching his apartment and he had already been informed that he would be in state’s custody for some time. The lockdown was a premature precaution taken by the faculty in the building he was supposed to be in for class.

  6. Lene says:

So are you saying that the faculty, without the administration’s knowledge, decided to lock down the building where they conducted class?

There are still important, unanswered questions:
You explain that you believe that the lockdown was a premature precaution. On what basis, information or threat did the faculty initiate the lockdown?

How long was the lockdown in affect and what time was it initiated?
    What building did it involve?

  7. We were not advised or warned or locked down says:

For the record. The TRIO Department, in the basement of Prep Hall where the alleged “lock down” took place, was not notified of any problem at all until Friday after the incident happened on Tuesday. It is possible that Hukill, in her ineptitude was advised, but made a decision not to advise those of us who have had “run-ins” with Parks in the past…hmmmm… worth exploring it seems to me…!

  8. Anon are you drinking Kool-aid? says:

You surely must know by now that the integrity, strength, judgement, and wisdom of Wiley, et al is clouded by his pure self-serving, narcissistic passions. Please, stop drinking the Kool-Aid.
